Closed Face – Specifications.

 

 

Post and Rail.

1. Height – 150 to 300mm (up to 1ft high) Two high of the 150mm (6”) Treated Pine Sleeper.

> Post are fully set in concrete approx. 300 – 400mm deep.

> Post size can be 150 x 75mm (6”x3”), The same size as the rails, as this will not look too bulky. There is not a lot of retaining material so at this height these posts look good.

> Posts can be set vertically at 2.4m centres (8ft) as there is not a lot of pressure against the wall. However, a dummy post can be fixed in the middle just for the look if you want, this post does not need to be concreted in, it can just sit into the ground about 100mm (4”)

> No drains are necessary, but this does depend on the amount of moisture will build up behind. If the ground is naturally moist then it is always safer to place a drain in behind than to not.

> Plastic is still fixed in behind the wall whether you drain it or not. This will prevent any moisture seeping through any joins you have in the rails.

2. Height – 300 to 600mm (1- 2ft high) Four high of the 150mm (6”) Treated Pine Sleeper.

> Post are fully set in concrete approx. 500mm (1’8”) deep.

> Posts can still be set vertically at 2.4m centres (8ft) as there is not a lot of pressure against the wall. A dummy post can still be fixed in the middle just for the look if you want, this post does not need to be concreted in, it can just sit into the ground about 100mm (4”)

> Drains are necessary, but the extent of the system will depend upon the amount of moisture that builds up behind the retaining wall. For the drainage systems See Drainage Specifications.

> Plastic is fixed in behind the wall, This will prevent any moisture seeping through the horizontal joins you have in the rails.

3. Height – 600 to 900mm (2- 3ft high) Six high of the 150mm (6”) Treated Pine Sleeper.

> Post are fully set in concrete approx. 600mm (2ft) deep.

> Posts should be set vertically at 1.2m (4ft) centres without exception. When you start to get into this height range there is an enormous amount of pressure against the wall especially when it’s wet.

> Drains are necessary, but the extent of the system will depend upon the amount of moisture that builds up behind the retaining wall. For the drainage systems See Drainage Specifications.

> Plastic is fixed in behind the wall, This will prevent any moisture seeping through the horizontal joins you have in the rails.

4. Height – 900 to 1050mm (3- 3’8” high) Seven high of the 150mm (6”) Treated Pine Sleeper.

> Post are fully set in concrete 600mm (2ft) deep, minimum.

> Posts should be set vertically or with a 15% Batter depending on how active the soil is behind the wall. These posts are set at 1.2m (4ft) centres without exception. When you start to get into this height range there is an enormous amount of pressure against the wall especially when it’s wet.

> Drains are necessary, but the extent of the system will depend upon the amount of moisture that builds up behind the retaining wall. For the drainage systems See Drainage Specifications.

> Plastic is fixed in behind the wall, This will prevent any moisture seeping through the horizontal joins you have in the rails.

Timber Stacked Rails, (No Posts) closed face.

 

> This is a great way to retain on uneven ground as the variation of the base of the wall, with the sleeper placed on its face is much easier to control.

> Only used for walls up to 400mm (1’4”) in height as it only depends on the weight of the sleepers to keep the wall in place.

> A drain system is always placed behind the wall, this will relieve any pressure against these sleepers.

> If the retained material is not too active like clay then the drain system that you will need will just be a 65mm (2 1/2”) agg. Pipe with 10-12 mm (1/2”) gravel placed directly behind the sleeper. Ensure that the agg pipe has an exit point at the lowest ground level or is plumbed into the storm water system. See Drainage Specifications for this procedure.
