We will need to know at least these basic Math formulas in order to work out all our materials. So I have put together these three basic procedures to work out the area of the given shapes. From this you can calculate all that you need to be able to start the job at hand.

*Hope it helps….*

*OF COURSE TO MEASURE A TRIANGLE YOU JUST IMAGINE THIS BEING CUT IN HALF…. SO THE FORMULA IS AS FOLLOWS….*

* *

*NOW FOR CIRCLES WE USE THE FOLLOWING FORMULA ….*

* *

The thing to remember is that we wont have these exact shapes to deal with in our garden but rather average shapes, so what you can do is what we call grid your site, this just means to break the area up into sections and record each measurement of that section, this works particularly well if you have a variety of shapes that you are trying to work out.

*SO NOW WE CAN ALSO WORK OUT THE VOLUME ….*

Once we know the area of any shape in our landscape we are then able to work out the volume. This is just a simple formula of the area multiplied by the Thickness or Height.

So if our area of the Rectangle is 20 let’s say 20m2 and the thickness is 100mm (4”)

Then we simply multiply 20 by .1 to give us the volume. 20 x .1 = 2.0m3
